5 tips for combining traditional and modern styles in your interior

Decorating your home is not always easy. It can be difficult to choose between different pieces, colours or other decorative elements. Following trends means we do not have to think too hard and helps us avoid taking risks. However, when taking this approach, it is important to add a personal touch to our décor.

In recent years, a trend has emerged for mixing styles: modern design meets the old, giving it a new lease of life and adding a certain character. Be careful, though—it is easy to get it wrong! Here are our tips to help you avoid any mistakes!

Here are five useful tips for mixing styles, particularly old and modern, while avoiding any missteps.

1) You can repaint old furniture or reupholster vintage armchairs. This will modernise them and give them a new lease of life.

2) If you find pieces such as paintings, frames or antique mirrors, you can put them to good use. These types of pieces blend very well into a living room or bedroom furnished with modern furniture.

3) Take inspiration from vintage spaces while giving them a modern twist.
Example: if your kitchen is white with modern furniture, you can add vintage lighting, such as light fittings.

4) You can play with contrasts between different materials (e.g. concrete/wood), colours (e.g. white/black) or shapes (square, rounded…).

5) If your interior features elements such as mouldings, a brick wall or an old fireplace, highlight them (e.g. paint the mouldings, varnish the parquet flooring…). By making them stand out, you will bring a period feel to your interior while still furnishing your property in a modern style.

Now it is up to you to find the perfect combination for decorating your home.
