Hygge: the basics of cocooning

What do hygge and cocooning ultimately involve? Louisa Thomsen Brits, author of Hygge: The Danish Art of Well-being,  defines  hygge as “the ability to be present and together. It is a feeling of warmth, safety, comfort and protection. ” It could be translated as cocooning, cosy.
These are words that resonate with us now that autumn is well and truly here.

How can you embrace this practice?

First of all, bear in mind that Danish happiness cannot be bought. It is a state of mind, encompassing all those little moments when we feel good.

Live in the present moment

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL! Enjoy every little thing that brings you pleasure. For example, savour an evening wrapped up in a blanket with a hot chocolate and a good book.
Light some candles (the more, the better!) and put on some comfortable pyjamas. Allow yourself to take time for the simple things, to slow down and not feel guilty about every bite of overly sweet cake you eat. Savour the fresh breeze while you are tucked up warmly under the duvet.
Hygge is about authenticity and a return to simplicity; it is a precious moment when you allow yourself to EN-JOY.

Nurture human connections

Above all, this way of life highlights the power of human contact. According to the Danes, being surrounded by good company is the secret to happiness.
Gather in a warm and welcoming place to share a good meal with those you love.

Create

Do you feel like making something with your own hands? It is time to tackle the DIY project you spotted months ago or cook a delicious meal.
You will feel proud of yourself, and it will give you a sense of happiness.

Disconnect

Why not take the time to get back to what truly matters? Switch off your phones and computers for a few days. If you cannot manage that, at least take a break from social media. Spending time away from screens will allow you to enjoy your surroundings: look up—the natural world is beautiful and restorative.

Remember that authenticity lies at the heart of hygge. Being yourself is the key! Everyone has their own version of hygge, so do not put any pressure on yourself: practise it however you wish. The only aim is for it to bring you the sense of well-being you are seeking.
