Container homes: why choose one? Many people would like to build their own home. This may be to create the home of their dreams, one that reflects who they are, or simply an unconventional home. Some of them have embarked on a rather bold project: building their home entirely from shipping containers.
A container home?
Container homes are often subject to preconceptions. Many people assume that they are unattractive, uncomfortable or have other preconceived ideas about them. However, when you look a little more closely and explore what has already been achieved, you quickly realise that the reality is quite different.
These homes often resemble genuine architectural creations, so much so that it would frequently be impossible to tell what they were made from. Indeed, many of them are true gems in terms of aesthetics and comfort.
At what cost?
However, contrary to what you might think, these homes come at a cost. Although purchasing the land and containers is not the most expensive investment, the amount of work required adds considerably to the cost… it is not simply a matter of placing the containers on a plot of land. To make them habitable, they must first be welded together, then insulated, before all the necessary connections are installed (electricity, drainage, exterior façade, etc.). All the fitting-out and decorating work must then be added to this (painting, furnishings, windows, etc.).
Although expensive, this project makes it possible to live in a home that both reflects who we are and is unique and unconventional.
