Let your employer know that you are looking for a property; they will probably be more willing to let you leave early or use part of your lunch break. Take time off if necessary! By being flexible, you will have a better chance of being among the first to view the property.

Presenting yourself well is essential. First impressions matter enormously, although there is no need to turn up in a suit! Speak politely to the agent/owner and, if possible, engage them in conversation so that they remember you.
